Research - Other Local Companies
Pickersleigh Chip Shop, Malvern
I thought this would be a good example of how a re-brand can
benefit a company. Before this chip shop was re-branded it has very dull
signage and graphic inside the building which at first glance looked very
uninviting and I think it made the shop blend in with other competitors in the
area. Nothing stood out with this chip shop and it was starting to look too
outdated for 2018/2019.
The picture below is of the shops re-brand. It looks a lot
more inviting and the signage, interior and exterior has been updated.
On my way through Malvern I decided I would have a chat with
the owner of the chip shop to have a discussion on if and how rebranding has
changed their business. I spoke to Pav Patel and he explained Since the
re-brand of his shop they have gained more customers and have become a lot more
popular in the local community. He stated "The re brand has made the restaurant more appealing to people, the modernisation really helped increase our profits and has made our customers happy”
I have noticed this myself through social media
as people always recommend this service. I think this example is good evidence
that re-branding can help improve a business, especially if that business is
modernised and since this, it has made the shop stand out from local
competitors in the area.
Just for Pets, Malvern
This shop is a pet supply shop and although there are a few
of them scattered around the midlands, I thought this would be another good
example of how a local business can become successful and more popular by a
rebrand. This company almost went into administration and the re-brand was the
company’s last hope. https://www.worcesternews.co.uk/news/16272543.just-for-pets-unveils-1m-rebrand-plans-after-administration-fears/
I think the re-brand of this company has proved to be
successful. There were quite a few times when I had gone into this shop in the
past and it was empty. Since the re-brand I have seen a considerable amount of
more people in this shop. I have noticed myself going here more often as the
graphic inside the shop are a lot more pleasing to look at now than before. I
also think the logo outside the shop has a big influence on drawing in
customers. I think compared to the old logo which is seen above, the new logo
(below) is more visually pleasing and makes it stand out from its competitor
around the corner, Pets At Home.
The use of the cartoon animals makes it appealing for
children, but the colours of the signage create an appeal for adults. Although
I am branding an electrical company, I do think this particular shop is very
inspiring as they were on the verge of collapse, but the use of bold colour and
simple graphics has made a dramatic difference.
Ping An
Ping An is a local takeaway and eat in shop which I have been
visiting for the past 4 years. The shop is owned by an ex University of
Worcester lecturer and his wife, I asked them what makes their business
successful. They explained to me that being
central to Worcester has helped them to gain regular customers, although they
do have competition from a new big chain rival, Yo! Sushi. Their regular
customers are mainly students as they offer large portions for a cheap price.
They rely on word of mouth to keep their business going.
I think for a lot of people visiting this shop it is
convenient, on the go food which people admire and how friendly the owners are.
Although they do have a Facebook page, I do think they need to get themselves
out there more by creating a website and updating their signage for their shop.
Local shops in Worcester and surrounding areas do seem to come and go because
of competition from bigger companies and ever increasing rent charges, and I do
think this local business could be in trouble in the future as shops in
Worcester expand and larger companies move in.
Brays of Malvern
Brays of Malvern has been going since 1895 and will be
closing next year in 2020. They state that they have struggled with competition
from the internet but I also think the shop looks very outdated and they do
sell outdated looking clothes which do not appeal to modern society. A lot of
locals have been made quite upset about the closure of this shop as people do
see it as a relic of Malvern because this shop has been open for over a 100
years. When I did live in Malvern I would visit Great Malvern town a lot, and I
feel like this shop was overlooked a lot as it was out of the way from other
surrounding businesses. I don’t recall ever seeing anyone in this shop when I
have drove/ walked past it.
I do think this company did need to modernise itself in order
to keep up with the ever-growing competition from bigger companies and the
internet. As you can see their website is very outdated compared to a bigger
rival such as Fat Face (Below). I think if they did a re-brand of the company
and focused a lot more on their website and advertising through the internet
they would stand a chance against other competitors. However, I do think they
wanted to keep that authenticity about them but I think this has gone against
them in the end.
Aesthetics by Sian
In the past few weeks my next-door neighbour has been setting
up her own business. I was keen to ask her how she went about advertising this
business. During a chat she explained to me that having social media is a must
nowadays when promoting a company, she has found she gets most engagement
through Instagram. Including pictures of the type of work done and including
discounts is an effective way of getting your name out there. Although this is
a cosmetics company, I thought she offered some good advice about how I could
help my client.
