Research - Big Electrical Companies


Western Power Distribution 


This is a large-scale company which is based in the Midlands. You can usually see their vans in the local area. They are strongly connected to social media through their website where they keep their audience updated on electrical problems and events in certain areas in the Midlands. Their close link with social media is very interesting as I believe it helps keep them well known and popular across the community. I think this also shows they are a caring company who want to engage their audience using social media. Looking at this this company has made me realise that social media is a powerful tool and it will be important for me to design good social media banners for my client. To help them promote their company, ultimately it will be down to them to keep their audience updated and engaged with their work.







Halsion 
Halsion is a large company who has merged with other companies over the years to provide more services to customers. They are London based so they have plenty of competition from the surrounding area. 

I wanted to look at their website as it is more advanced than the smaller electrical companies I have been looking at. It includes lots of animations and a more graphical/ illustrative appearance. I particularly admire the smooth transitions of the animations as it gives a premium feel to the website. 

The overall look of the website makes you feel as though they are a large trustworthy company. when you well designed websites you can tell the company is invested and takes pride in what they do. 

 


Skanska


Skanska is a large company which has branched out from Sweden in to most of Northern Europe. They specialise in engineering and other forms of construction as well as supporting other industries in helping them reach their potential. 


Their website is very detailed with many pages. I found navigation of this website to be quite hard as there are so many links to other pages which can be quite bombarding. As a large company they have a lot of information to convey to their audience but I do think they could possibly simplify the majority of their pages to make them more appealing and to have a hierarchy of information. 

Arthur McKay


Arthur McKay is a large electrical and mechanical company who are based in London but offer services around the country. 

Looking at the logo, it makes you feel like it is a premium service. The navy blue background creates a sophisticated feeling that stands out from its smaller 'Worcester' rivals. I do think if they moved to Worcester a lot of people looking for an electrician would chose them, purely because of the logo design. I think with contractor services the logo does play a huge role in the amount of customers they attract. Good design means more customers. 

Their website has been designed and built very well. It is very simple but includes the right amount of information to describe their services. the balance of the text and images is very good with a clear hierarchy of information which is complimented by the layout of the pages. 




E.on 

 E.on are one of the UK's largest power and gas companies where they generate electricity, and retail power and gas. They are one of the world's largest investor-owned power and gas companies who employs around 12,000 people in the UK and more than 79,000 worldwide.

Scottish Power are one of the biggest energy companies in the UK. They supply energy to over 5 million households and businesses. They also generate electricity at wind farms to create a eco friendly future.

Npower generate about 10% of the UK's electricity, which is over 6.5 million households and businesses. They are in the top 10 most popular energy companies in the UK.

Research - Other Local Companies

Pickersleigh Chip Shop, Malvern I thought this would be a good example of how a re-brand can benefit a company. Before this chip shop was re-branded it has very dull signage and graphic inside the building which at first glance looked very uninviting and I think it made the shop blend in with other competitors in the area. Nothing stood out with this chip shop and it was starting to look too outdated for 2018/2019. The picture below is of the shops re-brand. It looks a lot more inviting and the signage, interior and exterior has been updated. On my way through Malvern I decided I would have a chat with the owner of the chip shop to have a discussion on if and how rebranding has changed their business. Research - Local Competitors

Darren Spencer Electrical  This is a local contractor based in Worcester. I found them through a simple search on Google. They seem to have good reviews on google which drew my attention to them and I wondered how they are so popular. The company logo seems to be very simple but legible and it uses orange and yellow which is a very unusual colour for an electrical company. These are not colours you see in electrical installation which has made me believe these colours are used in the brand to make it stand out from other competitors in the area. I do believe this could work against the company as a lot of people would probably overlook the company van if they saw it.
